Why are TRVs So Ugly? [They don't have to be!]

Why are TRVs So Ugly? [They don't have to be!]

Ugly vs beautiful TRVs

Cast iron radiators are incredibly stylish and make a room feel as warm and welcoming as they look. As such, Radiators 4U’s decorative cast iron radiators complete the look and feel of any Tudor, Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian-style home. However, just because a radiator compliments a classic look doesn't mean it shouldn't feature the latest technology like Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs).

But why would you fit a modern-looking valve onto a classically styled radiator? Wouldn't it spoil the look and feel of your room? Not necessarily.

What is a TRV?

As we have previously written about on this blog, a TRV is a self-regulating valve that automatically controls a room's temperature by managing the flow of hot water to a radiator. TRVs have many advantages over traditional manual radiator valves, which are either fully open or closed. By helping to keep a room at a constant temperature, TRVs offer a more efficient and effective heating solution and, therefore, can help to reduce energy bills while maintaining a comfortable room temperature.

Despite these advantages, TRVs can have a bit of an image problem.

When many people think of a TRV, they will most likely picture a valve with a big white plastic thermostatic head. While these TRVs look perfectly fine on a modern radiator in a functional space, they might be considered a little ugly for the more design-conscious. When you've spent a lot of time, effort and money on creating a specific look and feel for your home, you'll want to avoid an ugly TRV catching your eye and potentially spoiling the aesthetics of your room. It would be like wearing a bespoke Savile Row suit with a pair of Crocs shoes.

The good news is TRVs have come a long way since the original, somewhat clunky designs, and modern doesn’t have to mean ugly.

Beautiful TRVs to match your style

At Radiators 4U, we have a wide range of TVRs to match the look and finish of your radiators.

Our antique and unlacquered brass TRVs wouldn’t look out of place in any period home while retaining all the advantages of a modern TRV valve. When matched with complimentary radiator pipe sleeves, those newly installed cast iron radiators could look like original fixtures and fittings in your home.

We also believe our more contemporary styles don't have to be big, ugly, plastic units. Our modern angled TVRs come in antique, unlacquered, and Old English brass, satin (brushed) and black nickel, chrome, anthracite, and pewter finishes.

Even when you are looking for a simple, low-cost TRV, our modern valves are far from ugly, perfectly balancing form and function. In addition, unlike many similarly priced models, our modern TVRs thermostatic heads are solid, stylish-looking units with no ugly and difficult-to-clean vents.
